Illinois Working Together Statement on Gov. Rauner's Speech

Rauner's Big Money Political Games Speak Louder Than His Empty Words

Illinois Working Together Campaign Director Jake Lewis released the following statement in response to tonight's speech from Gov. Rauner:

"Tonight's speech is yet another Rauner political ploy designed to shift the blame for the crisis he intentionally created. At the exact same time the governor calls for "unity," he is using the speech to raise campaign cash and spending millions on political attack ads that undermine any attempt at compromise.

"It is undeniable that things in Illinois have gotten much worse under Rauner. More than a billion dollars are owed to schools. The state's credit rating is on the brink of junk status. Seniors are facing devastating service cuts. Countless jobs have been lost as the state falls more than $15 billion behind on paying its bills.

"Bruce Rauner needs to learn that actions speak louder than empty words. If the governor is actually serious about compromise, he will end his big-money political attacks, drop his partisan agenda, and do his job."
