Illinois Working Together Statement on the Bipartisan Balanced Budget Veto Override

Illinois Working Together Campaign Director Jake Lewis released the following statement regarding today's budget veto override:

"After more than two years of an unnecessary crisis at the hands of Bruce Rauner and his extreme political agenda, Illinois finally has a bipartisan balanced budget. Though it may take years for the state to recover from the Rauner Crisis, this bipartisan balanced budget is a first step to begin to repair the damage done by the governor. It keeps our schools open, provides care for our seniors, and gives our economy a measure of desperately needed stability.

"Gov. Rauner's refusal to compromise or do his job have pushed this state to the brink of financial calamity while hurting our students, seniors, and economy. Illinois' bill backlog has tripled to $15 billion while taxpayers must pay more than $800 million in late payment interest penalties. K-12 schools are owed $850 million, 30,000 fewer children are receiving childcare, services for seniors have been slashed, public universities have been cut to the bone, and jobs are fleeing the economic uncertainty.

"Gov. Rauner has failed to introduce or sign a balanced budget since taking office, cynically attempting to use the 'leverage of the crisis' to try and force through his political agenda. The sooner Rauner realizes that he is the governor of Illinois — not the king — and drops his political agenda for good, the faster the people of Illinois will recover from the damage he has done."
